I think for a while I just assumed cobbler was similar enough to a crisp or crumble and never needed too much individual exploring, because crisps had already earned top spot on my favorite dessert list. Since I started working for myself, I’ve started spending a lot of time in coffee shops. Despite that I stopped drinking coffee for the most part late last year, I’ve spent a good portion of each week this past year mooching off of free WiFi and becoming a regular at a few favorite coffee shops on my street.

When I’ve been with myself a little too long, I pull myself out of my flour-covered pajamas and head to the small coffee shop a block down from my apartment, or the Starbucks a half a mile down the road. Let’s be honest, my choice usually depends on how hard it’s raining – the harder it’s raining, the more likely I’m taking the shorter walk. My friend Ally and I were hanging out in our backyard, lounging in the sun on our (super awesome) swing bench, brainstorming baking ideas for me, when this idea was born. I thought of the dulce de leche I had sitting in the cabinet, and wanted to pair it with some thing fruity that was still in season, but berries + dulce de leche seemed like a weird combo. The thing I love about this cake is that I see so much potential for it. Trade out the blackberries for sliced peaches, or cranberries, or pears. Add orange zest, or lemon zest, or lime zest. Can you believe another year has already passed? In some ways, it seems like 2011 was just beginning, but parts of 2011 seems decades ago. So many things have happened this year, and for most of them, I am infinitely grateful. This year I:

  • Graduated from high school
  • Decided where to go to college
  • Completed my first semester of college
  • Met a ton of amazing food bloggers from San Diego at the San Diego Food Blogger Bake Sale
  • Traveled to Bali, Switzerland, and Italy
  • Had an article written about me in the newspaper
  • Was on TV for the first time
  • Was a featured blogger on Yummly and BlogHer
  • And even got recognized by people for being Bakerita…so flattering!

I’m officially a high school graduate! As of June 17th, 2011 at about 5:10 P.M., I’m done with high school.

Seriously. Done.

It’s super weird, but I’m sooo excited to finally move on to something new. San Diego was an amazing place to grow up and I was always really fortunate to be able to attend some of the countries top public schools, but I’m ready for a change. So Seattle, here I come!
