I’ve written about my cute little patio garden before, and nothing makes me happier than having access to tons of fresh herbs right outside my sliding kitchen door.

Seriously, when I get grab a couple sprigs of thyme to bring some bright flavor to a chicken dish, or pluck a few basil leaves to chiffonade for the top of my risotto, I get all excited. Food dork, much? [Read more…]

I realized the other day that I haven’t shared one appetizer recipe for this entire year. Um, I guess I got a little carried away with the chocolate and cookies, as per usual.

But with the holidays coming up and quick and easy appetizers being in high demand, a scrumptious holiday appetizer was in order – especially because this is the season for baked brie, one of my favorite holiday treats  [Read more…]

I bet you’re guessing you’re on the wrong website right now…right?? 😁 Chili is not usually my typically fare…but, little known to most, lurking in the back of my recipe archives, are a couple savory recipes lurking around.

I posted the recipe for my “best chili” way back in December of 2010, only a couple of months after Bakerita was founded. I shared more savory recipes back then, and because I was a new blogger, my pictures could only be described as terrible.

This Mozzarella Heirloom Tomato Galette showcases beautiful heirloom tomatoes bubbling with melted mozzarella cheese, all tucked into a gluten-free + grain-free Parmesan crust. Since I tried making my first galette earlier this year, this irresistible chocolate strawberry one, I’ve been having galettes on the mind rather often. A galette, if you’ve never had one before, is essentially a rustic version of a pie or tart. It has a similar flaky crust that’s rolled out, and it can have a fruity or savory filling, but instead of being placed in a pie dish or tart pan, the edges of the pastry dough are folded up and around the filling, forming a freeform kind-of pie.

After that initial Chocolate Strawberry Galette was such a raging success, I had dreams of a galette that could be dinner – I wanted something savory, full of veggies and cheese. From that, the Spinach Artichoke Galette was made…and subsequently devoured. [Read more…]

This simple tart makes a wonderful appetizer, lunch, or dinner.Okay as promised, before we get to talking about this swoon-worthy ricotta heirloom tomato tart, I’m going to finish telling you about my Eurotrip! We left off leaving Malta, heading off the Italy…

Sicily was the first stop in Italy, and we ventured from port to Taormina, a precious Italian town perched in the hills overlooking the ocean. We explored the town, wandering through the pedestrian-only streets and window shopping, before having a delicious pizza lunch and gelato (when in Italy, right?) and heading back to the boat. Pair with a side salad for the perfect lunch or dinner.I’ve started to create a bucket list of food projects to take on in the next couple months. They’ve all been on the brain for a while, and this summer I’m determined to make them all actually happen. Croissants took about four years to get checked off my food project bucket list and it will definitely not take that long before the next thing on the list gets a big old check mark next to it.

So what’s coming up? Homemade sourdough made with a starter I made all by myself, homemade kombucha (I’m a little freaked out about the SCOBY though), from-scratch mozzarella, and homemade seasoning salts (I’m kind of a salt dork). They’re all coming soon in my kitchen…as soon as I find an apartment, that is. Let me know if you want them to be documented on the blog! [Read more…]

Ever had a monte cristo sandwich? You've never had one like this - these Monte Cristo Pancakes have pancakes instead of bread, with a filling of ham, cheese, and raspberry jam.

I’ve had quite a few phenomenal monte cristos in my day. There’s something about the salty/savory combined with the sweet that draws me to the dish, and I’ve ordered it at many brunches – the sandwich at Milk in Barcelona is amazing, and Dirty Oscar’s Annex in Tacoma, Washington also makes a great one.

Traditionally, a monte cristo is a sandwich of ham, a good melting cheese (typically gruyere), and jam. The whole sandwich is then dipped in a french toast-like egg wash, and grilled to melt the cheese and griddle the bread. Sometimes, it gets a good sprinkle of powdered sugar as well. [Read more…]

Flavored with green chiles & cheddar cheese, they are perfect served with a bowl of chili or a drizzle of honey.I got back from my spontaneous, four day trip to Hawaii a few days ago and it feels like a whirlwind tropical dream. Thankfully, I acquired some tan lines to prove it actually happened. We got so lucky with the weather, and every day in Kauai was warm and dry, which is rare for January.

We hiked to some of the most magnificent spots imaginable, ate fresh fruit and fish every day, and spent plenty of time exploring beaches, caves, and little side-of-the-road fruit stands. The waves were extraordinary – I had never seen waves quite like this. We’re talking giant thirty, forty foot swells crashing with wild abandon against the rocks, creating splashes like you couldn’t believe. [Read more…]
